Scale Degrees
There are seven degrees (notes) of the Major Scale.

Eah degree of the scale has a name that describes its distance from the tonic (first note of the scale)

Tonic

The first note of the scale

 

Dominant

Five notes above the tonic

Subdominant

Five notes below the tonic

Mediant

Half way between the Tonic and the Dominant

Submediant

Half way between the Tonic and the Subdominant

Super Tonic

Half way between the Tonic and the Mediant

Leading Tone

Half way between the Tonic and the Submediant
